“I make monuments to insignificant moments. This is the “for what to do”, the enabler to paint. Initially I make mounts out of rocks and sometimes adorn them with flowers or place them in a setting. I then paint them or more to the point make a painting. In some respects I want to commemorate ordinariness, acknowledge the unsung, pay tribute to the everyday. But, that’s for others to discuss I am only here to paint, to make a just painting. In some ways it kind of reflects the person you are.”
Paul Spencer is represented by Sophie Gannon Gallery, Melbourne.
